Copper Market Pivots Through Early November as Chile Supply Hits Two-Decade Low and Bagdad Expansion Lifts Long-Term Outlook

  • Copper futures slipped to about US$6.40 per pound on November 3 after rebounding on November 2
  • Chile third-quarter copper output fell to a two-decade low, limiting near-term supply relief
  • Freeport approved a US$4.5 billion Bagdad copper expansion on November 4, 2026
  • Bagdad output rises by 225 million pounds to over 400 million pounds per year by mid-2030
  • US net imports supplied 57 percent of refined copper consumption in 2025, with Chile the main source

Copper futures spent the first week of November 2026 pivoting on tech-stock sentiment, rate expectations, and an increasingly tight mine-supply picture. On November 2, prices rebounded from a two-day decline and climbed back toward US$6.50 per pound as the broader tech-stock selloff eased and oil retreated on signs of US diplomatic engagement with Iran. The relief was short-lived. By November 3, copper slid back toward US$6.40 per pound as a renewed AI-valuation selloff in equities and chatter around a December Fed rate hike pressured the metal, with higher oil feeding inflation fears tied to the Middle East situation. Underpinning both days was the same supply story. Chile's third-quarter copper output fell to its lowest in at least two decades, with only a modest rebound expected into 2027, which left market participants treating every rally as a chance to rebuild longs on scarcity rather than demand strength.

The structural supply angle sharpened on November 4 when Freeport-McMoRan approved a US$4.5 billion expansion of its Bagdad mine in Arizona. The project will lift annual copper output from Bagdad to more than 400 million pounds, an increase of about 225 million pounds, with molybdenum rising by 12 million pounds to over 20 million pounds a year. Concentrator throughput steps up to 115,000 tonnes of ore a day. Initial production is targeted for mid-2030 after about 3.5 years of construction, pushing long-term unit net cash costs roughly 20 percent lower. Capex sits about US$1 billion or 29 percent above the 2023 estimate, reflecting cost escalation, scope changes, and engineering revisions. The project economics are supported at about US$4 per pound copper, a level well below current futures.

The strategic angle matters as much as the volume. US net imports supplied 57 percent of refined copper consumption in 2025, with Chile accounting for 68 percent of those imports from 2021 to 2024. Domestic expansions such as Bagdad, timed to come on stream after 2030, do not help near-term buyers. For procurement teams, the setup argues for a two-track response. Copper tube, rod, cable, and alloy fabricators in India, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East should lock the November and December window at prevailing levels while bracing for further Chile-driven spikes, and should diversify sourcing between Chilean, Peruvian, Zambian, and Indonesian cathode origins to protect blended landed cost. Downstream buyers for EV, grid, and AI data center programmes should move 2027 contract talks away from fixed premiums toward formulas indexed to LME cash copper and Chilean mine output so that both macro volatility and the structural supply deficit flow through contract pricing.
