LG Chem Aims To Increase Annual Carbon Nanotube (CNT) Production Twice Fold By Expanding Its Site With Its 4th CNT Plant

LG Chem reports the start of building its Daesan Complex carbon nanotube (CNT) plant, making it the company's fourth CNT plant. It will be located 80 kilometres southwest of Seoul and will commence operations in 2025, raising its annual production capacity to 6,100 tons, twice as before.

This project follows the successful launch of the company's CNT 3 Plant in Yeosu with a capacity of 1,200 tons which became fully operational recently, allowing LG Chem to increase production to 2,900 tons/year from the previous 1,700 tons.

The company works to constantly boost its CNT production capacity to win over the global CNT market that is progressing towards electric vehicle (EV) battery materials. The company's CNT plants have been operational since 2017 and initially began at its CNT Plant 1 with a 500-ton production capacity. Since then, they have been focused on constructing new facilities each year in order to fulfil rising demand.

Owing to the fluidized bed reactor technology of the company, production lines at LG Chem's four CNT plants can ramp up production to 600 tons every year, displaying the highest single-line capacity across the globe.

The company's CNT materials would be delivered to EV battery makers as conductive additives like LG Energy Solution. They are also on the lookout for increasing their CNT sales to other sectors except for EV batteries as they recently supplied CNT-added, metal-replacing electrostatic coating plastics to Mitsubishi Motors, a Japanese automaker. They are also supplying to an automaker in Korea.

According to the Procurement Resource article, LG Chem, in a move to increase its production capacity, will be opening up its fourth CNT plant at Daesan Complex. The company is continuously expanding its existing capacity to meet global demand for CNT and dominate the market segment.
