Lactoflavin, more commonly known as Riboflavin (vitamin B2), is a supplement full of nutrients and is also present in food as a form of vitamin. It is essential in the synthesis of flavin adenine dinucleotide and flavin mononucleotide, which is the two most crucial coenzymes. The coenzymes perform various benefits such as cellular respiration, energy metabolism, antibody synthesis, and adequate development and growth.

Moreover, these coenzymes help in the metabolism of niacin, folate, and vitamin B6. The supplement is prescribed for treating corneal thinning, and when taken orally, it can also reduce headaches caused by migraine. Lactoflavin deficiency is rare and usually occurs when other vitamins and minerals are insufficient.

Industrially, riboflavin can be made from either fermentation or chemical synthesis. In the fermentation process, vitamin B2 can be produced in a single step, that is cost-efficient. On the other hand, the chemical methods take a lot of steps and require a lot of investment. As a result, the use of the fermentation process is more economical and ecological, in turn replacing the chemical synthesis.

The vitamin (70 percent) is extensively added as an additive in feed. It is present in considerable amounts in nuts, meats, eggs, dairy products, brewer's yeast, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, wild rice, green leafy vegetables, soybeans, wheat germ, mushrooms, and whole grain enriched cereals and bread.

Vitamin B2 is among the eight B-complex vitamins and is essential for producing energy in the body along with several other functions. It is crucial for eyesight and overall eye health as it is necessary to protect a vital eye antioxidant, glutathione. It can also reduce the risk of developing cataracts.

Vitamin B2 also helps maintain a healthy diet in pregnant women, and its deficiency can cause preeclampsia, a condition in which a person develops high blood pressure during late pregnancy. It was discovered that people that suffered from migraines needed to take doses of B2 to feel better, and its high dosage could significantly lower the occurrences of migraines.

In addition, vitamin B2 also maintains the liver and the digestive system's mucous membranes. It converts tryptophan into the amino acid niacin. It helps keep the eyesight intact, prevents cataracts, and promotes healthy nerves, skin, and muscles. It can absorb and activate folic acid, iron, and vitamins B1, B3 and B6. It is also responsible for the production of hormones by the adrenal glands.

The largest countries producing and supplying Vitamin B2 and its derivatives unmixed are China, South Korea, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, and the top importers with high demand for the product are the United States, Germany, France, India, and Singapore.

Riboflavin prices (Vitamin B2) are increasing in the Chinese domestic market due to the rising demand from end-user sectors, especially after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is due to its several health benefits since the zero COVID policy production activities have resumed driving the domestic and international demand for nutraceutical products, like Vitamin B2.
