Ammonia Prices Climb on Tight Supply in Mid-April Then Ease as Inventories Build

  • Ammonia prices rose recently in mid-April as plant maintenance, mechanical failures, low operating rates and thin inventories tightened supply.
  • Fertilizer producers and chemical buyers supported the market through steady agricultural and industrial demand.
  • Stronger export orders and higher overseas prices diverted supply from domestic buyers and added upward pressure.
  • Prices fell recently in late April after plant restarts and earlier high output led to inventory buildup.
  • Weaker post-peak fertilizer demand pushed nitrogen fertilizer buyers toward need-based purchases, reducing market support.

Ammonia prices moved sharply recently in April, rising in mid-April before declining in late April as supply conditions changed and fertilizer demand lost strength.

Prices increased in mid-April as supply tightened across major production hubs. Plant maintenance, mechanical disruptions, lower operating rates and thin inventories reduced available ammonia volumes, giving producers stronger control over offers.

Demand remained firm during this period. Fertilizer producers continued buying for agricultural use, while chemical-sector consumers maintained steady purchases. This helped support the market even as buyers faced higher prices.

Export demand also added pressure to domestic availability. Rising international ammonia prices and stronger overseas orders encouraged suppliers to direct more material toward export markets, leaving less supply for local buyers and supporting further price increases.

The market turned weaker in late April as supply pressure returned. Several plants restarted, earlier high operating rates added to stock levels, and manufacturers faced growing inventories. With more ammonia available, sellers lowered quotations to keep cargoes moving.

Demand also softened after the spring fertilizer season passed its peak. Downstream nitrogen fertilizer buyers reduced purchases and shifted to need-based buying, which weakened market support and pushed prices lower.

The recent April price movement showed a quick reversal in the ammonia market. Tight supply, strong farm demand and export orders lifted prices in mid-April, but improved availability and slower fertilizer consumption pulled the market down in late April.
