Spot 2-ethylhexanol in China pushed to a one-year high in the middle of October 2026 as Shandong producers kept raising offers through the first fortnight, propylene feedstock stayed firm, and downstream plasticizer buyers continued to cover against expectation that cost-side pressure would persist. Factory offers tracked higher through the week ended October 15, with the market consolidating in a bullish band and sitting in the top tier of its 60-day, three-month, and one-year price ranges. The pre-window baseline on October 9 saw Shandong-area producer offers at CNY 8,900 to 9,400 per tonne after a round of CNY 100 to 200 per tonne increases, and the move continued into the window as upstream propylene costs refused to roll over.

The driver chain is clear. Propylene stayed at multi-month highs on strong olefin cracker economics and limited PDH restart, which has lifted the cost of propanal and n-butyraldehyde feedstock entering the 2-EH unit. On the downstream side, plasticizer buyers producing DOP, DEHP, and DOTP for PVC compounders have been working to secure fourth-quarter volume ahead of the construction and wire and cable buying window, and this has sustained demand pull at a time when operating rates in East China 2-EH units are already close to capacity. Technical indicators by October 15 showed short-term momentum fading, with the five-day moving average difference narrowing against the ten and twenty-day lines, which flags pullback risk if propylene turns or DOP tenders slow.
For procurement teams, the current setup argues for a two-track response. Converters with firm fourth-quarter plasticizer demand should cover near-term 2-EH requirements before further Shandong offer increases bite, and pit domestic Chinese material against seaborne cargoes from Southeast Asia and the Middle East to protect blended landed cost. Buyers with flexibility should hold back a slice of November coverage against the prospect of a propylene-led pullback, since the top-tier pricing position historically draws rapid buyer resistance once construction demand softens. Term discussions for 2027 should move away from fixed premiums towards a formula indexed to propylene and n-butyraldehyde to lock in the cost pass-through logic on both sides.
