The Shandong n-butanol market closed September 2026 at a multi-month high after a run of price increases through the first half of the month, and the strength carried into early October before range-bound trading set in. Reference offers in Shandong moved to about CNY 8,500 per tonne by September 30, up from CNY 7,566 per tonne on September 1, a cumulative rise of CNY 934 per tonne or 12.33 percent across the month. The sharpest leg of the move came in the first half of September when quotes jumped by more than 17 percent, with prices holding at elevated levels through mid-month before easing modestly into the last trading sessions ahead of the National Day holiday.

The move was driven by a combination of propylene feedstock strength, tight local supply, and pre-holiday stockpiling by downstream buyers. Propylene prices in the Shandong hub pushed higher through August and September on strong olefin cracker economics and limited PDH restart activity, which lifted the cost of propanal and n-butyraldehyde feedstock entering the oxo chain. Several Shandong n-butanol producers ran with low plant inventories, and spot availability was tight enough to encourage buyers from butyl acetate, plasticizer, acrylate, and solvent-blending segments to lock in cover before holiday closures. Once the pre-holiday buying push faded in the final week of September, the market turned cautious and consolidated around the higher reference level. Through the first week after the holiday, offers remained anchored near the September peak, with sideways to range-bound trading expected in the short term as downstream operating rates signal the next leg.
The broader oxo-chain readthrough confirmed the firmness. The 2-ethylhexanol market, which shares the propylene and n-butyraldehyde cost line with n-butanol, sat at a one-year high through mid-October 2026 and remained in the top tier of its 60-day, three-month, and one-year price ranges, with Shandong producers continuing to raise offers.
For procurement teams, the setup argues for tactical cover rather than full lock-in at the top. Butyl acetate, butyl acrylate, DBP plasticizer, and solvent-blend converters in India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East should take the post-holiday range-bound tone as a window to split November and December needs across Chinese and Southeast Asian origins, protecting blended landed cost against further propylene-led moves. Buyers negotiating 2027 term contracts should move away from fixed premiums towards a formula indexed to propylene and n-butyraldehyde so that both the cost line and the Shandong supply swing are reflected in landed cost. Converters with flexibility on grade should hold back a portion of November coverage against the prospect of a propylene-led pullback, since the current reference level has historically drawn rapid buyer resistance once downstream pull softens.
