  • Sugar dealers are restricted to holding no more than 4,000 quintals of inventory at each location and must release the stock within 30 days.
  • Dealers must submit weekly inventory declarations through the government’s online portal, allowing authorities to compare reported stocks with purchases and sales.
  • The controls are intended to limit speculative stock accumulation and improve the movement of available sugar from mills into the physical market.
  • Domestic sugar production is estimated at about 28 million tonnes after ethanol diversion, with closing stocks projected at roughly 4.3 million tonnes.
  • Large food and beverage buyers may receive smaller and more frequent deliveries, increasing the need for direct mill contracts and tighter dispatch planning.

India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train has completed more than 1,200 kilometres of operation, replacing over 3,200 litres of diesel on its initial route. The operating record moves hydrogen rail technology from equipment demonstration toward routine transport use.

The ten-coach train uses two hydrogen driving power cars that deliver a combined 2,400 kilowatts. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity onboard through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Lithium iron phosphate batteries support the propulsion system and help balance changes in power demand.

A dedicated storage and refuelling installation supports the service. The facility can hold about 3,000 kilograms of green hydrogen. Gas is stored at pressures of up to 500 bar and dispensed at 350 bar, requiring specialised cylinders, compressors, valves, piping and monitoring equipment.

The train includes independent systems for detecting hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke. Automatic shut-off equipment and continuous ventilation are built into the design. These systems will require scheduled inspection, sensor replacement, calibration and specialised technical staff.

Successful rail use can create a new source of hydrogen demand beyond refining, fertilisers and industrial chemicals. Passenger and freight operators need predictable daily fuel volumes, making rail routes possible anchor customers for regional hydrogen production projects. Stable demand can also support investment in electrolysers and renewable-power contracts.

The purchasing requirement extends beyond the gas itself. Rail operators will need fuel cells, battery packs, storage systems, dispensing stations, water-treatment units, compressors, safety equipment and maintenance agreements. Spare-part availability and equipment compatibility will influence operating reliability.

Hydrogen quality will require close control because impurities can damage fuel-cell components and reduce performance. Supply contracts will need product specifications, testing requirements, pressure conditions, delivery schedules and rules for rejected loads. Buyers will also need fallback arrangements for production outages or refuelling-station maintenance.

Planned expansion to another route will test whether the system can maintain performance under different operating conditions. Broader adoption will depend on fuel cost, equipment life, station utilisation and the cost of maintaining high-pressure infrastructure. The completed mileage provides buyers and project developers with operating data that was previously available only from smaller trials.
