A federal investigation into a destructive chemical warehouse fire in Georgia has placed fresh attention on the storage and handling risks surrounding bromine-containing pool-treatment materials. Investigators found that water from a failed sprinkler component contacted reactive chemicals stored inside the warehouse. The reaction produced heat, fires and a toxic plume containing bromine and other gases. The findings were released on July 21, almost two years after the September 2024 incident.

The sprinkler system had suffered corrosion for several years. Inspections conducted before the fire had identified hundreds of damaged sprinkler heads in the part of the building where large quantities of chemicals were stored. The warehouse contained nearly 14 million pounds of reactive materials when the incident occurred. That amount was more than twice the level anticipated during the building’s permitting process.

Bromine procurement teams can use the investigation as a basis for reviewing supplier qualification standards. Price, delivery time and production capacity do not cover the full exposure attached to reactive materials. Buyers need evidence that suppliers control warehouse inventory, inspect fire-protection systems, monitor corrosion and separate materials that can react with water. Contracts can require current inspection records, incident reporting and proof that emergency plans have been tested.

Storage limits deserve closer review. Excess stock can increase the scale of an incident and restrict the ability of emergency crews to reach affected areas. Buyers that ask suppliers to hold large safety inventories should check whether warehouse design, ventilation, firefighting equipment and staff training are suited to those volumes. A commercial request for extra stock can create a hidden operational risk when capacity is measured only by available floor space.

The report also supports closer checks on secondary distributors and toll storage sites. A producer may meet handling standards at its own plant but use third-party warehouses with weaker controls. Procurement teams can request the location of every approved storage point and reserve the right to review safety records. For bromine and bromine-based products, supplier continuity plans should cover site closure, contamination, transport restrictions and the rapid transfer of orders to an approved alternate source.
