Caustic soda assessments in Shandong on July 17 showed a wide price spread between liquid grades and concentrated flakes. Flake material containing at least 96 percent sodium hydroxide was assessed between $404.09 and $430.16 per tonne, with an average of $417.12 per tonne. The assessment covered ex-works material produced in Shandong.
The average assessment for 32 percent ion-membrane caustic soda solution was $250.54 per tonne, within a range of $236.33 to $264.74. The 50 percent solution averaged $286.77 per tonne, with a range of $273.74 to $299.81. These prices cannot be compared directly without adjusting for sodium hydroxide content, water weight and delivery cost.
A tonne of liquid solution contains less active sodium hydroxide than a tonne of flakes. Buyers should convert quotations to a 100 percent dry basis before selecting the lowest-priced supplier. Tanker distance, storage capacity and heating or dilution requirements can then be added to determine the delivered cost.
Liquid caustic soda is often economical for plants close to chlor-alkali production centres or bulk terminals. Flakes offer higher active content per shipment and can suit buyers in locations where transporting water is costly. Flakes also require suitable dry storage and handling systems, creating a different cost structure from liquid material.

The July 17 spread gives procurement teams room to negotiate by concentration rather than treating caustic soda as a single grade. An alumina refinery with large tanks and high daily consumption will assess the market differently from a textile processor purchasing smaller lots. Water-treatment operators may also place greater value on predictable concentration and short delivery times than on the lowest ex-works quotation.
Contracts should specify the concentration basis, sodium carbonate limits, sodium chloride limits, iron content, testing method and price-adjustment formula. Freight assumptions should be written into comparisons, since a low plant-gate price can be offset by tanker shortages or long inland routes.
Buyers sourcing from China should also track electricity costs and chlor-alkali operating rates. Caustic soda output is linked to chlorine production, so supply can change when demand or economics for chlorine derivatives move. The July assessment provides a useful price reference, but delivered offers require grade-specific conversion and logistics calculations.
