QatarEnergy has entered a long-term agreement to supply helium to the German industrial gases firm Messer. This marks the first direct supply contract between the two companies. Under the deal, QatarEnergy will provide 100 million cubic feet of high-purity helium annually from its Ras Laffan facilities.
The helium will be sourced from Qatar's North Field, a gas reservoir so vast that its helium content is estimated to meet worldwide demand for the next three decades. Once two dedicated helium plants are fully operational, Qatar is projected to account for roughly a quarter of global helium output.

Messer, the largest privately-owned industrial gases company globally, will distribute the helium to its international customer base. Other major helium offtakers from the Ras Laffan facility include industry leaders Linde, Air Liquide, and Iwatani Corporation.
Helium is a critical component in several advanced technologies. Its applications include the operation of MRI scanners in healthcare, the manufacturing of semiconductors and fibre optics, and use in quantum computing and space exploration.
