QatarEnergy Signs Long-Term Urea Supply Deal with Mitsui & Expands LNG Talks with Japan

  • QatarEnergy signed a 20-year agreement to supply up to 500,000 tons of urea annually to Japan's Mitsui & Co., starting in 2026.
  • The deal supports QatarEnergy's strategy to expand its global urea presence and contribute to food security.
  • This aligns with Qatar's plan to more than double its urea production to become the world's largest exporter.
  • Separately, QatarEnergy was in negotiations in May 2025 to supply over 3 million tons of LNG per year to Japanese importers.
  • Japan is a key LNG market for Qatar, which is the world's third-largest LNG exporter and is pursuing major production growth.

QatarEnergy has entered into a long-term agreement to supply urea to the Japanese corporation Mitsui & Co., Ltd. Under the 20-year contract, QatarEnergy will provide up to 500,000 tons of urea annually to Mitsui, with deliveries scheduled to begin in January 2026.

The minister of State for Energy Affairs and the president and CEO of QatarEnergy expressed satisfaction in solidifying the long-standing partnership with Mitsui through this new supply agreement. He stated that the pact aligns with the increasing global demand for urea and supports QatarEnergy's strategy to expand its international presence in urea production. This initiative, he noted, is intended to contribute to enhanced global food production and security. He also referenced a previously announced project to develop a new world-scale urea production complex, which is anticipated to more than double Qatar's urea output and establish the country as the world's leading urea exporter.

In a separate development from May 2025, it was reported that QatarEnergy was engaged in negotiations with Japanese companies concerning a long-term liquefied natural gas supply agreement linked to its North Field expansion project. According to sources familiar with the matter, the proposed deal involved supplying a consortium of Japanese importers with a minimum of three million metric tons of LNG per annum.

Industry data indicated that Qatar was the world's third-largest LNG exporter in the previous year. The country has outlined ambitious plans to significantly increase its LNG production capacity by 2030. Japan, positioned as the world's second-largest LNG importer, has historically been a major customer for Qatari gas, with imports notably increasing over a decade ago following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
