  • Aster and Puraglobe signed an MOU to study a re-refined base oil facility in Singapore.
  • Bukom Island is being assessed as the potential site for Project PURANOVA.
  • The plant would convert used motor oil into Group II, Group III and Group III+ base oils.
  • The project would be Puraglobe’s first high-volume re-refining facility outside Germany if developed.
  • The feasibility work will examine technology fit, feedstock supply, site design and project economics.

Aster Chemicals and Energy Pte. Ltd. and Puraglobe Germany GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to assess the development of a re-refined base oil plant in Singapore, with Aster’s Bukom Island identified as the potential project site.

The proposed Project PURANOVA facility would process used motor oil into Group II, Group III and Group III+ base oils, which are used in lubricants for engines, aircraft systems, wind turbines, electric vehicles and industrial machinery. If developed, the plant would mark Puraglobe’s first high-volume re-refining facility outside Germany.

The companies will carry out joint feasibility work covering technology integration, used oil supply, plant configuration, site requirements and project economics. The collaboration brings together Puraglobe’s re-refining process technology and operating record in Germany with Aster’s refining base, commercial reach and Singapore operating platform.

Base oil is the main liquid component in finished lubricants. It is blended with additives to produce engine oils, gear oils, hydraulic fluids, turbine oils and other products that reduce friction, control heat and protect moving parts. Higher-grade base oils, including Group III and Group III+, are valued for purity, stability and performance in demanding applications.

Puraglobe’s HyLube and HyRes technologies are designed to recover used motor oil and convert it into base oils comparable to virgin products. The company has built its commercial experience through three process trains in Germany and supplies major lubricant manufacturers globally.

For Aster, the proposed project would support a move into higher-value production linked to circular feedstocks and advanced refining. Singapore’s established refining infrastructure and logistics network are expected to play a central role in the feasibility study as the partners assess whether the project can serve growing demand across Asia.
