Calgary-based company Nova Chemicals Corp. is making strides towards sustainability by taking on a new project, constructing their first mechanical recycling facility in Connersville, Indiana. This facility will be dedicated to the processing of postconsumer plastic films, with the end goal of creating Nova's Syndigo recycled polyethylene (rPE) on a commercial scale.
The company has set the target of commencing the processing of these films by 2025, with a projected supply of over 100 million pounds of rPE to the market by 2026. Nova Chemicals is looking to expand its recycling efforts over the next few years, with the ultimate goal of achieving a 30% recycled content rate as part of its total PE sales by 2030.

The President and CEO of Nova Chemicals, Roger Kearns, has made a commitment to creating a more sustainable future through the innovative reshaping of plastic products and supporting their customers in meeting their recycled content goals. To further this objective, Nova Chemicals has partnered with Novolex to establish a recycling facility in Indiana, a state that is renowned for its focus on sustainability, innovation, and a business-friendly environment.
This new facility is expected to create approximately 125 new job opportunities and become one of the leading employers in the Connersville area. The selection of Connersville as the site for this enterprise was based on its close proximity to a sufficient supply of postconsumer film feedstock from surrounding metropolitan areas and efficient rail service for supplying Syndigo rPE to customers.
Nova Chemicals has recently introduced its 2030 Roadmap to Sustainability Leadership, which entails a significant investment of 2-4 billion USD by 2030 to expand its range of sustainable products, decarbonize its assets, establish a mechanical recycling business, and explore advanced recycling technologies.
