India Electricity Demand Hits Record as Evening Supply Gap Widens

India’s electricity system is facing greater pressure during peak consumption periods as power requirements rise faster than supply can be delivered through parts of the transmission and distribution network. Peak demand increased around 12% from the comparable period and reached a record 270.8 GW, highlighting the growing requirement for dependable generation and grid capacity.

Pressure became more visible during evening hours when solar generation was unavailable. Non-solar peak electricity demand reached 255,172 MW, compared with supply of 252,127 MW. The resulting 3,045 MW shortfall was more than twice the gap recorded during each of the preceding two reporting months.

The northern region accounted for most of the shortage. Evening demand reached 95,919 MW against supply of 93,269 MW, creating a deficit of 2,650 MW. Other large consuming states also recorded differences between peak requirements and electricity supplied.

Installed generation capacity remains considerably higher than peak demand, indicating that generation availability alone does not determine whether industrial and commercial consumers receive power when required. Transmission and distribution constraints can prevent available generation from reaching areas experiencing heavy loads. Total installed capacity stood at 548.86 GW.

For industrial procurement teams, this distinction matters when evaluating electricity supply risk. Manufacturing plants operating energy-intensive equipment can face production interruptions even when national generation capacity appears adequate. Contracted power arrangements should be assessed alongside local grid reliability, feeder capacity and backup-power requirements.

The generation mix is also changing. Thermal power remained the largest contributor but its share declined from 72.71% to 68.39% across the reported period. Renewable energy, including large hydro, increased its contribution from 24.13% to 28.11%.

Higher renewable generation can support growing electricity requirements, but evening demand creates a different balancing requirement because solar output declines as consumption remains high. Planned battery storage of about 39.88 GW and pumped-storage capacity of 10.95 GW are intended to strengthen the system’s ability to manage these periods.

Large electricity buyers can reduce exposure by reviewing contracted capacity, peak-hour operating schedules, backup systems and regional supply reliability. Grid delivery capability is becoming as important as installed generation when assessing industrial electricity procurement.
