European firm Lhyfe has embarked on constructing Germany’s largest hydrogen production plant, located in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, with a capability of producing up to four tonnes of green hydrogen daily, based on a 10MW installed capacity. This plant, notable for being Lhyfe’s initial production endeavor beyond French borders, signifies the commencement of a future network of plants that aim to disseminate green hydrogen throughout Germany in the upcoming years. Utilizing renewable electricity derived from hydro, wind, and solar sources, the plant is anticipated to begin operations in the latter half of 2024.

Luc Graré, leading Central & Eastern Europe at Lhyfe, underscored that this project not only attests to the economic feasibility of deploying hydrogen solutions in the realms of transport and industry but also propels the state toward evolving into a prototype region for the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Graré articulated appreciation for the collective strides taken by the state and Schwäbisch Gmünd toward realizing their robust objectives for a renewable energy-based hydrogen economy.
The initiative, supported by financial backing from the state of Baden-Württemberg and a €6.4m EU grant, will provide hydrogen partially for use in the H2-Aspen industrial park and a JET H2 hydrogen filling station. Schwäbisch Gmünd’s Mayor, Richard Arnold, envisages the city morphing into a prototype region for a nation-wide unfolding of a hydrogen and filling station network. Arnold emphasized that, upon completion, the plant will solidify Schwäbisch Gmünd’s standing as the preeminent hydrogen producer in the state.

With a pipeline backed by a total of 10.3 GW installed production capacity throughout Europe, Lhyfe is steadfast in its mission to industrial scale decarbonization of mobility and industry through green hydrogen. This follows Lhyfe's earlier achievements of inaugurating the world’s inaugural large-scale green hydrogen plant in conjunction with a wind farm in 2021 and the initiation of an offshore pilot platform for green hydrogen production at the port of Saint-Nazaire in 2022.
According to the article by Procurement Resource, Lhyfe is developing Germany's largest hydrogen production plant in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg, projecting up to four tonnes of green hydrogen daily with a 10MW capacity, and planned to be operational in the latter half of 2024. The effort, leveraging renewable energy sources, marks a significant step in Lhyfe's expansion outside France and towards a network of plants across Germany. Supported by state and a €6.4m EU grant, the plant is anticipated to augment local and state-level hydrogen production and infrastructure, fulfilling both industrial and transportative hydrogen needs.
