Chesapeake Energy Corporation Pens a Deal with Vitol Concerning a Liquified Natural Gas Supply Expansion

The recent deal between Chesapeake Energy Corporation and Vitol indicates a significant step in the expansion of liquified natural gas (LNG) supply. Under the agreement, Chesapeake is set to provide Vitol with up to one million tonnes of LNG per year, starting from 2028. This collaboration involves jointly selecting the most suitable liquefaction facilities in the United States for converting Chesapeake's gas production for Vitol.
Chesapeake’s President and CEO, Nick Dell’Osso, expressed his contentment regarding the expansion of their relationship with Vitol. He emphasized this agreement as a crucial move towards making the company 'LNG ready'. He attributed this progress to their advantageous portfolio, promising returns, and robust financial standing.

Ben Marshall, who leads Vitol Americas, remarked on the substantial shifts in the global energy landscape over the past couple of years. He underscored the pivotal role of U.S. natural gas production and liquefaction in meeting global energy demands. According to Marshall, there's a significant surge in global LNG demand, and Vitol is intensifying efforts to deliver cost-effective and flexible energy solutions worldwide.
The White House released a statement in April 2023 highlighting the U.S.'s commitment to increasing LNG supplies to the European Union (EU). The U.S. doubled its target and ensured an additional delivery of 15 billion cubic meters of LNG to the EU in 2022. This effort resulted in a substantial rise in U.S. LNG exports to the EU, reaching 56 billion cubic meters from the previous 22 billion cubic meters in 2021. Consequently, the EU became the largest recipient of U.S. LNG exports, constituting over half of the total supplies. By the end of 2022, Russia's contribution to the EU’s gas imports significantly declined to 16%, a steep drop from 37% in March 2022.
