German recycled paper prices continue to rise in April ‘24, after witnessing a similar trend in March ’24. Specifically, prices for mixed paper and board commonly used in supermarkets increased by more than USD 21.4/tonne. The most notable rise in prices was witnessed for sorted graphic papers, which are used in de-inking processes.

Recycled paper prices in Germany primarily rose on the back of considerable demand. While there was a significant rate of operation in the paper mills, the supply side lacked momentum. Hence, prices moved upwards amidst low supplies and high demand.

Despite this, there is a difference of opinion on the extent of production increase. Some experts believe that production levels are quite high (supported by a noticeable improvement in order bookings due to global economic growth). On the other hand, many are still cautious about the situation.

Overall, there is a significant gap between the supply and demand for recycled paper in Germany. The incoming supply of materials is not sufficient to meet the needs of the mills, causing prices to rise sharply.
