Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has shared that its unique facility, the Takasago Hydrogen Park, has commenced its full-fledged operations. Claimed to be the world's inaugural integrated hydrogen validation facility, it's strategically positioned at the Takasago Machinery Works, nestled in the Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. The park recently initiated hydrogen production via the process of electrolysis.

The facility's blueprint segregates it into three crucial zones: production, storage, and deployment of hydrogen. Within the production precinct, a significant role is played by an alkaline electrolyser, a creation of the Norway-based entity HydrogenPro AS.

This equipment boasts the capacity to churn out hydrogen at an impressive rate of 1,100 Nm3/h. Subsequently, this produced hydrogen finds its resting place in storage units, which cumulatively can accommodate up to 39,000 Nm3 of hydrogen.

For the purpose of enhancing product dependability, Mitsubishi Power has set its sights on verifying the co-firing of hydrogen and further aspirations to achieve 100% hydrogen combustion in gas turbines on this site. These tests are slated to be conducted at the T-Point 2 facility, housing the Mitsubishi Power JAC gas turbine, in conjunction with the mid-sized H-25 gas turbine. The latter has been previously employed in combustion tests.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi Power has announced that hydrogen generated at the park will undergo validation tests for 30% co-firing at T-Point 2, and they anticipate concluding this by the year's end.

Underscoring its innovation drive, Mitsubishi Power shared insights into their ongoing endeavors in pioneering diverse hydrogen production methodologies. This encompasses the solid oxide electrolysis cells, anion exchange membrane water electrolysers, and the groundbreaking turquoise-hydrogen production technique. These avant-garde methods are on Mitsubishi Power's radar for validation at the park before they enter the commercial sphere.

This initiative by MHI to create a cohesive hydrogen solutions ecosystem seamlessly integrates with the company's overarching 'Mission Net Zero.' This strategy is an embodiment of MHI's commitment to attaining a carbon-neutral status by the year 2040.

MHI's approach is tri-pronged: it emphasizes the decarbonisation of established infrastructures, cultivates a CO2 solutions ecosystem, and champions hydrogen solutions. A milestone in this roadmap is the slated validation of 100% hydrogen combustion in the H-25 gas turbine, earmarked for 2024.

According to the article by Procurement Resource, Mitsubishi Power, part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), has launched the Takasago Hydrogen Park, the world's first integrated hydrogen validation facility located in Japan's Hyogo Prefecture. The facility is divided into areas for production, storage, and hydrogen use. A key component is an alkaline electrolyser from Norway's HydrogenPro AS, capable of producing hydrogen at 1,100 Nm3/h.

The park aims to validate hydrogen co-firing and achieve 100% hydrogen combustion in gas turbines. Mitsubishi Power is also exploring advanced hydrogen production methods like solid oxide electrolysis cells and the turquoise-hydrogen technique. The park supports MHI's 'Mission Net Zero', targeting carbon neutrality by 2040, and plans for 100% hydrogen combustion in the H-25 gas turbine by 2024.
