Green Ships AS and offshore shipper Bourbon Horizon to incorporate its ammonia-to-power technology into two upcoming Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs).

Amogy, a sustainable energy company, has entered into a collaboration to provide its innovative ammonia-to-power technology for two Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs). These vessels are set to be constructed by consultancy firm Green Ships AS, which is partnering with the offshore shipping company Bourbon Horizon. Green Ships boasts a rich experience in creating energy-efficient and zero-emission vessels, having designed an array of marine structures, from offshore vessels to cruise ships.

The upcoming two ePSVs, with an option for an additional vessel, will fall under the management of Bourbon Horizon, a company with a current fleet of seven offshore vessels. Bourbon Horizon is a collaboration between the Bourbon Group and Horizon Maritime. The primary objective of integrating Amogy’s technology is to power the vessel's ePSV power plant solution with zero-emission fuel.

Describing this venture as groundbreaking, Per Kavli, Green Ships' CEO, highlighted their reliance on both public and private funding channels to make this project a success. One of the driving forces behind this project is to align with the standards established by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). The IMO has expressed its ambition to curtail fossil fuel usage from 2030 onward, targeting a reduction of at least 50% in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

Bjørn Remøy, Bourbon Horizon's Managing Director, emphasized the significance of scaling up zero-emission technology and pioneering ship designs to meet the maritime sector's regulatory norms. The alliance with Green Ships and Amogy marks a new era for offshore PSVs, he mentioned.

Amogy's innovative Powerpack, a proprietary solution, employs a cracking technology that transforms liquid ammonia into hydrogen gas, which then integrates seamlessly into fuel cells. Typically, for vessels the size of a standard PSV, liquid ammonia is paired with fuel cells and substantial batteries.

The ePSVs, equipped with an ammonia tank of roughly 100m2 capacity, will operate with 40% less power across all operation modes. Christian Berg, Amogy Norway's Managing Director, stated that the technology for transforming ammonia into a zero-emission fuel is now operational, pushing the maritime industry closer to achieving IMO's goals.

Amogy has been actively advocating for ammonia-based, emission-free solutions to support the transportation sector's decarbonization journey. Their compact ammonia cracker, designed to convert ammonia into hydrogen, has been successfully demonstrated in various applications, from drones to semi-trucks. As part of their maritime decarbonization initiatives, Amogy collaborated with Trafigura to research ammonia's potential as a carrier. Amogy's CEO, Seonghoon Woo, conveyed that the insights from this joint research will bolster industry-wide attempts to decarbonize transportation and meet global climate objectives.

According to the article by Procurement Resource, sustainable energy firm Amogy is partnering with consultancy Green Ships AS and offshore shipper Bourbon Horizon to incorporate its ammonia-to-power technology into two upcoming Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs). Green Ships, known for its zero-emission vessel designs, and Bourbon Horizon, which operates a fleet of seven offshore vessels, aim to create ePSVs powered by zero-emission fuel using Amogy's technology.

This venture seeks to align with the International Maritime Organisation's goal to reduce fossil fuel usage and cut CO2 emissions by at least 50% by 2050. Amogy's Powerpack, which converts liquid ammonia into hydrogen gas, will power these ePSVs, leading to 40% power savings. The collaboration furthers maritime decarbonization, positioning the sector closer to achieving global climate goals.
