This collaboration marks a critical milestone in Essar Oil UK's ambitious $1.2 billion investment plan aimed at transforming the Stanlow refinery into the world's first low-carbon refinery. The initiative is set to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 2 million tons, accounting for a 95% decrease, thereby positioning Essar Oil UK as a pioneer in producing low-carbon fuels.

Deepak Maheshwari, CEO of Essar Oil UK, expressed enthusiasm about entering the next phase of the company's decarbonization strategy. He highlighted the significant role of Topsoe's SNOX™ technology in achieving their objective of a sustainable and environmentally responsible refinery operation. The ICC facility, in tandem with an upcoming hydrogen fuel switching project, is projected to substantially reduce the refinery's carbon footprint.

Essar's overall decarbonization strategy encompasses two groundbreaking projects. Firstly, the ICC initiative, announced in November 2022, aims to be operational by 2028, targeting an annual reduction of around 1 million tons of CO2 emissions. Secondly, the shift to hydrogen fuel, replacing natural gas, is expected to cut another 1 million tons of CO2 emissions annually. These efforts place Essar Oil UK at the vanguard of the UK’s energy transition, ensuring the refinery's pivotal role in national energy security and resilience.

With Topsoe and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries on board, Essar Oil UK has secured most of its technology partners. The company is now poised to advance to the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase. The development of the basic engineering design packages (BEDP) for the licensed technologies is already in progress.

Elena Scaltritti, CCO at Topsoe, expressed excitement about being selected as a technology licensor for this landmark project. She emphasized Topsoe's commitment to supporting Essar Oil UK in achieving its decarbonization goals and noted the project as a testament to the potential for decarbonization within the fossil industry.
